A real postcard, with a real stamp, in your real mailbox, on your birthday (maybe).
Put me on the listWhen I was a kid, I collected postcards. Every trip, every gift shop, every roadside attraction I grabbed a few. Family brought me back stacks of postcards from trips as souvenirs. Most of them I never mailed. They just accumulated in the desk drawers and odd pockets of my parents' house, where they stayed for years as I grew up and forgot all about them, the way childhood collections go.
Decades later I was cleaning out my parents' house and found them. I couldn't bring myself to just throw them out. So I started mailing them one at a time, to friends and family, on their birthdays.
It turns out a piece of cardboard with a handwritten note beats any notification on your phone. People loved getting them. I loved sending them. Some years I remembered, some I forgot.
If you'd like a postcard on your birthday, tell me where to send it. That's the whole deal — no catch, no newsletter, nothing to buy, and I might not get around to doing it. Just mail, the good kind. You deserve a postcard from someone other than the dentist on your birthday.
Consider your mailbox warned. Around your birthday, keep an eye out for a little rectangle of cardboard with your name on it.
